West Side celebrated a year of athletic excellence and achievement during its annual Sports Awards ceremony on Tuesday night. The evening honored student-athletes from every sport, recognized 44 scholar athletes for their accomplishments in the classroom, and celebrated the school’s State Champion Basketball team as players received their championship rings. Special honors were also presented to Bryce Martin and Carley Bain, who were named Male and Female Athlete of the Year, while longtime athletic supporter Willie McNabb was recognized for his 15 years of service on the school board.
To be a Scholar Athlete at West Side, a student must maintain a 3.5 GPA for the entire year. This is no easy feat, considering the fact that student athletes have after school practices and many late nights traveling home from games. We are proud to have 44 students that received this distinction!

Athletes of the Year
The final awards of the evening were the WSCS Male and Female Athletes of the Year. Coach Randall Miller explained that the process begins by nominating athletes who participated in multiple sports. Head coaches then discuss each student’s academic accomplishments, athletic achievements, leadership qualities, Christian witness, how they are perceived by teachers, and the example they set for younger athletes before casting their votes together.
This year's Female Athlete of the Year is Carley Bain. Carley is a senior and she played volleyball, basketball, and softball. The Male Athlete of the Year was awarded to Bryce Martin. He is also a senior, and he played basketball and baseball, and ran track.

Championship Legacy Cemented
A highlight of the evening was a moment many of our athletes had been waiting for since February 21, 2026, as the State Champion Basketball Team officially received their championship rings. Players and coaches were recognized for their historic season and celebrated once again with family, teammates, and supporters as they received a lasting reminder of their hard work and dedication.
Honoring a Champion for West Side

Finally, the evening concluded with a special recognition of Willie McNabb for his 15 years of service to the school board, his leadership in renovating the gym, and his contributions to starting our Booster Club and his leadership of it. He has poured so much time and resources into helping build our athletic program into something the students take pride in.
The night served as a reminder of the strong community and tradition that continue to shape WSCS athletics.
